Group therapy can be an exciting and extremely productive way to effect the personal growth we want. In group we learn our impact on others and experiment with the integration of new behavior. I am currently offering two life circumstance-focused psychotherapy groups for men:
"SECOND ACT" This is a new group for men of retirement age (like myself.) I'm calling it "Second Act" to reflect an emphasis on redefining ourselves and focusing on whatever will give our lives meaning and purpose, perhaps something very different than that to which we devoted so many years. It is also a time for reinvesting ourselves in our primary relationships, and finding new ways to relate. There are so many men who can benefit from the inspiration, support and fellowship of this group, now in process of formation.
MEN & RELATIONSHIP. A group participant may be going through a difficult divorce or separation, want to improve his existing relationship or be searching for another. It has been said that men “haven’t a clue” but the truth is that for each of us, our personal experience has been limited to what was modeled for us and to the statistically small number of relationships we’ve had, and only with the type of partners that we have been attracted to so far. So in addition to honing our relational skills in group process, we will consider many concepts that have been proven effective in improving intimate relationships, including tools for communication of feelings, the appreciation and negotiation of differences, recognition of attachment strategies, and an understanding and respect for the heightened emotional stakes of intimate relationships. We will also pay attention to female psychology, “what do women really want,?” so that we can become more responsive and desirable partners and find the satisfactions we desire as men.
Interested men will meet with me, at no expense, to evaluate whether group participation will be helpful. Concurrent personal therapy or several years of past therapy and good personal insight are highly desired. Some participants may be drawn from my own practice. Groups will be limited to 6 to 8 participants. Fees for group therapy are typically half the fee for individual therapy, but I will charge only $40 per session, paid monthly in advance, and will offer a sliding scale so that affordability should not be an issue. If you’re thinking about joining a group but you are not sure, contact me and I’ll be happy to talk about it.
